Praia Del Rey
Designed by the renowned American architect Cabell B Robinson Praia Del Ray
is one of the top courses in the area that shouldn’t be missed. The course measures 6, 405 yards and is a Par 72 from the championship tees. There are two distinctive
layout’s of nine holes. The course has lush vegetation with a number of holes that run along the coastline. The view’s from these holes features the Atlantic Ocean, and the Berlenga Islands. One additional feature of the golf course are the large bunkers, and thoughtfully designed greens. The course is often described as a mix of mighty dunes, other among fragrant pines- that is an assault on the senses. A must play fro anybody who visits Portugal.
Furnas Golf Course
This golf course is set in the beauty of San Miguel near the Azores Islands. It first started out as nine holes, but was later expanded in 1990 to 18 by Bob Cameron and Chris Powell. A spectacular golf course with smallish greens, which are wickedly contoured, you’ll need a sharp short game to score well at Furnas. The blend of the old and the new work flawlessly. The views of the golf course are spectacular. The course overlooks the Furnas Valley. A real hidden gem!
Porto Santo is a design that offers great variety and uses the natural beauty of the landscaping. This will become a must play as Seve Ballesteros designed the course that opened in 2004. The course uses the backdrop of the beach and ocean and two extinct volcanoes. The fairways of the opening nine holes sweep past lakes and bunkers. The back nine is more dramatic, set high on the cliff tops with a glistening Atlantic view. In addition, a fun 9-hole par three course is featured here. The Portugal Open was played here in 1992 & 1993. This is the finest design of Seve Ballesteros, and a must play on your trip.
Quinta Do Lago (South)
The Quinto do Largo South course is certainly the most famous in the area and has played host to the Portuguese Open on no fewer than seven occasions with Mark McNulty and Colin Montgomerie being former winners. William Mitchell designed the golf course and
imported American standard greens, tees, and bunkers. Given its championship pedigree, this is a course, which will be enjoyed, by both better players and average players alike. The fairways are relatively generous and the predominantly sandy but undulating ground flatters medium hitters. With umbrella pines –lined fairways, bold bunkers and a splash of water features, the South course at Quinta so Largo is certainly an eye- catching layout and one which will appeal to the discerning golfers. The course is 6,500 yards long and a Par 72. In addition, the resort features a driving range, golf academy, and pro shop.
Quinta Do Peru
Quinta Do Peru is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in Portugal. Quinta Do Peru is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in Europe. Set in a pine forest, which extends more than 300 acres, Quinta do Peru is a very special place. Located just 30 minutes south of Lisbon in one of the most welcoming Cities in Europe. Quinta De Cima
Quinta De Cima is designed with the more accomplished golfer in mind. This 36 Hole complex has two outstanding golf courses, but Quinta De Cima stands outs as the best. Located within the Ria Nature reserve, one of the advantages of this resort is that there is no housing project on the golf course. It measures 6585 yards long, and it is always in pristine condition. In addition, the driving range is quite expansive and has expansive views of mountain and oceans. There is a Golf Academy for those golfers who wish to work on their golf games.
Oceanico (old) Vilamoura
The costal town of Vilamoura is situated in the perfect central location and it is arguably Europe’s largest and most successful golf destination. The Oceanico old golf course is the gem of all the courses located in the area. The course is a Par 73 and it measures 6254 yards. The course opened for play in 1969 and has remained one of Portugal’s finest courses ever since. The golf course has been completely renovated although no major changes were made.
This is a must play when you are in Portugal. You will enjoy the new clubhouse, driving range, and pro shop, and other amenities, which include a putting green. A golf academy is also available if you wish to improve your game.
Monte Rei Golf
Monte Rei Golf is an exclusive Jack Nicklaus design, which is set over 1,000 acres
of glorious countryside in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve region. The golf course is a true gem, and has been voted number one in Portugal for 2014-2015. This Par 72 Championship golf course measures 6567 yards form the championship tees is a truly unique design. The course is located away from the concentration of courses that are abundant around the area. The course is set in the foothills of Tavira towards the Spanish border and the mountain setting is very special, which is evident on arrival where stunning views greet you. The golf course features an abundance of water hazards and some very special bunkering. There is water in play on 11 of 18 holes. The course with it’s spectacular view is a must play on your trip.
Oitavos Dunes is a Par 71 course that measures 6,300 yards from the Champion tees. The course was designed by Arthur Hills, and only one of two European courses that bear his name. The course is a lovely mixture of woodland and links-type holes that have been expertly laid to make the most of the existing
landscaping. The course has been voted by numerous golf agencies as a top 100 golf course in Europe. It features tight fairways and tricky greens. At 6,300 it is fairly short but beware, as it is a very tricky course.
Sam Lorenzo- Quinta
The Sam Lorenzo Golf Course was designed by Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, San Lorenzo has been consistently voted one of the best in Europe for over 25 years.
This past September (2015) they were voted 28th out of the top 100 golf courses in Europe. Located within the protected Ria Formosa nature reserve and estuary, the course boasts fairways that run alongside saltwater marshes, freshwater lagoons and the cooling Atlantic ocean. All 18 Holes feel in complete harmony with the nature reserve with the course and surrounding area. The course boasts some of the
best Bermuda based grass fairways you shall ever walk. The 18th Hole is one of the best finishing holes in golf that you will ever experience. In addition, the avid golfer will find a driving range, pro shop, and golf academy for their use. Truly a must play.
Troia Golf Course
Troia Golf Championship course is an 18 Hole, Par 72 course of 6,317 yards long
alongside the beach with the magnificent sea view. Designed by Robert Trent Jones
Senior, Golf World magazine ranked Troia as the #32 best golf course in Europe in 2011. Robert Trent Jones selected the 3rd hole as one of the best holes that he has ever designed. The third hole is described as a hole that fits perfectly into the landscaping with a magnificent sea view. In addition, to the golf course the avid golfer will find all the amenities like a driving range, pro shop, golf academy. One unique feature is the practice course.
Another must play!
Sir Nick Faldo designed this magnificent golf course with strategic play in mind. The course is one of the longer courses that you will find in Portugal at over 7,100 yards, but it demands careful positioning to score well. The real skill is that when you stand on the tee, the golf hole tells you what to do and if you do what it tells you there is reward but if you don’t you’re penalized. The back nine is quite hilly with some great views to complement the course. One of the unique features that have been built for the avid golfer is a Par 3 lighted course. In addition, a golf academy, Pro Shop, practice putting green, driving range, long & short game areas are available. The golf academy also offers golf lesson plans, with a custom-fitting studio to meet the needs of all golfers who want to improve.
The Penina Championship golf course was build by Sir Henry Cotton in 1966
and is situated on over 360 acres. The course is located midway between the villages of Portimao and the historic town of Largo. The course is a Par 73 with one par five or the front nine, and four par fives on the back. There are plenty of opportunities to create an under par score on these holes if you play smart. The quality of the course, and the test the golfer is going to be subjected to is much in evidence. Streams, water hazards and precarious ditches flank the course. This is a attractive and challenging classic Mediterranean layout. The avid golf has other opportunities to improve their game with a driving range, pro shop, and golf academy.
Quinta do Largo (Laranjal)
Laranjal opened for play in 2009 as is the newest golf course in Quinta do Largo.
Originally an orange grove, this beautiful par 72 championship golf course is situated in the Ludo valley. The golf course features spectacular fairways and well
defined greens. Laranjal is renowned for its five beautiful lakes and its abundance of umbrella pines, cork and orange trees. At 6,480 meters in length, the course is challenging and it demands the highest levels of concentration and accuracy. Its distinctive rolling terrain has been expertly designed and manicured to provide a world class golfing experience. The resort features two other golf courses, and many features that golfers want to improve their game like a driving range, pro shop, and golf academy.
Oceanico (Christy O’Conner Jr course)
Designed by Christy O’Conner Jr., this course is a perfect compliment for the
tougher Oceanico Faldo course and takes advantage of being situated in a fertile valley. Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features. The course is primarily aimed at the high handicap golfers, but plays tougher from the championship tees. Take advantage of the other club amenities that include a golf academy, lighted par 3 -9hole course, putting green, and driving range. This is a Par 72 -6,708 yard length golf course.
Villa Sol (Prime and Challenge)
Players of all abilities will find Vila Sol a wonderful challenge. The fairways are beautiful maintained and manicured and the many sand and water hazards are expertly placed to catch the ill thought out or poorly executed shot. The original
golf course was designed by Donald Steel and opened for play in 1991. The two 9 hole loops are called Prime and Challenge. The course fits beautifully into the
undulating landscaping and takes full advantage of the umbrella pine, fig, and cork trees, which frames every fairways, making the golfer’s target seem even narrower.
Vila Sol played host to the Portuguese Open in 1992 and 1993 and, it’s undeniably an excellent course that challenges and rewards at every turn.
The Oceanico Victoria is an Arnold Palmer designed golf course. The Oceanico Victoria golf course is an 18-hole, Par 72 championship layout, measuring 6651 yards from the back tees. This course was designed with tournament play in mind. The course features 5 or 6 tees per hole; wide undulating fairways; extensive water hazards and cleverly positioned bunkers. In addition there is an exceptional driving range and putting green. The Oceanico Victoria is a unique, unforgettable experience
for all who play there, and is a major venue for top international tournaments. The
course has hosted the WGC world cup and hosted the Portuguese Master every year.
Belas Golf Course
Belas opened for play in 1997 and it plays to a healthy 6,280 yards and is a suitable challenge for all golfer. The course is located between the towns of Belas and Vale de Lobo- a short drive from Lisbon center. The rugged hillsides, with sparse vegetation, only accentuate the lush green succession of gently mounded fairways, large scalloped bunkers and areas of penal water. The club has only 250 members so the course is open to visitors year round. The course is a very picturesque course and one that will leave a lasting impression on any visitor.
Aroeira No 1
Aroeira Golf Resort is a 900- acre paradise for golfers and non-golfers alike. Lisbon is a mere 20 miles to the north, so the climate is suitable for year round golf.
The course measures 6,122 yards and is a traditional par 72 layout that winds its way through dense pine forest, with beautiful lush Bermuda fairways. Frank Pennink designed Arorira and hosted the 1996 & 1997 Portuguese Open. In addition, the avid golfer will find a pro shop, driving range, and golf school.
Estela Golf Club
Estela Golf Club can rightfully boast to being one of the few that can justifiably lay claim to the “links” title. The course was designed by Duarte Sottomayor, who started working his career with the world renowned Robert Trent-Jones. Estela Was build in 1989, and is a traditional par 72 layout measuring almost 6,300 yards from the back tees. Estela has played host to a number of amateur and professional events and professional events that include the Portuguese Open. Estela will require long and straight drives to fairways that are almost totally absent of any bunkers. Open green fronts will allow the skilled “links” golfer to play low, running approach shots to putting surfaces that are renowned for their subtle undulations and speed. A golf academy is also available for you to improve your game.
The Millennium course was, as its name suggests, founded in 2000 and is one of the more accessible courses on the Algarve. With 9 of its 18 holes originating from the neighboring Laguna course, it mixes short tight holes, especially between the 3rd and the 7th, with longer open ones. It plays a little shorter than its 6793 yards but has a lot to offer. The facility offers all the things that a golfer can want, and then some. A lighted Par 3 – 9 hole Course, a driving range, pro shop, and golf academy are some of the features that you will find here.
Vale do Lobo
Vale do Lobo is the Algarve’s most senior golf resort, founded in 1962 and it is currently the largest luxury resort in Portugal. Much has happened at the Vale since Sir Henry Cotton laid out the first course at Valle do Lobo in the early 60’s. Cotton’s original layout has been split in half to form two new courses, the royal and the ocean. Theses course have been re-designed by Rocky Roquemore. The Vale do Lobo has been twice host to the Portuguese Open. Both courses take players through umbrella pine and fig tree lined fairways to the Atlantic- the Royal playing dramatically along the cliff’s edge, while the ocean sweeps down to the beach.
